back to it: the food

Well hello again. That whole playing hard to get game never really worked on me either, so I’ll be up front and apologize for the disappearing act. I hope you didn’t take my
blog out of your reader number out of your phone just yet.
Two small life updates: I turned 25 and started a new job. The new job part is the blame for the lack of posting and the getting older part is the blame for… old-age forgetfulness? Let’s kiss and make up and fast forward through these past two weeks with a photo recap, and I’ll point out the important parts. Nobody really reads the words on this thing anyways.
So up there when I mentioned the important stuff, I obviously meant food. Remember when this used to be a food blog? As the blog evolves I’ve realized I just like taking pictures of pretty things, which in my mind is food and friends.
But over the past two weeks I have been making a serious dent in my “SF to-try restos” list, and I’d love to share them with you guys. If you live in the area (or are coming to visit!) these are some of the noteworthy ones to add to your list:
Swan Oyster Depot: This place just made Bon Appétit’s 20 Most Important Restaurants in America, therefore making the wait for this 18-seat restaurant over an hour long, but I knew that was exactly what I wanted to do with my last day off before work (#youknowyoureafoodiewhen). I made some friends at the counter, and ordered an Anchorsteam, a few oysters and the smoked salmon. It was truly one of the most satisfying meals I’ve had in a very long time. Bonus points for walking down the street to get a Bob’s donut for dessert (that large donut-cake the size up my head in the post above is also from Bob’s, which was my kickass birthday cake from my kickass friends).
Mission Chinese: #9 on BA’s 20 Most Important Restaurants in America, I naturally had to try this one too. I actually went here for dinner after Swan Oyster Depot and Bob’s, outing me for my fierce devotion/trust for all things BA. We ordered a few dishes to share, but the stamed eggplant and sliced peanut noodles were my top picks. After dinner I received a shiny new knife as a birthday gift (thank you Cal), officially making it the best foodie day of my life. Actually, I think I repeated “this was the greatest day ever!” about 77 times over the course of the evening.
The Mill: This place has become a Sunday staple for me. I do not have enough good things to say about Josey and his out of this world bread. You can’t lose with any of the toast options, but the almond butter one is my favorite. Get a latte or iced coffee to wash down the dense bread that gets stuck to the top of your mouth.
Bar Tartine: We were in the neighborhood for a food photography thing, and I had heard good things about Bar Tartine’s dinner menu (I have had their open-faced smorrebrod from their lunchtime Sandwich Shop, which didn’t disappoint), so I was ready to give it a shot. I knew it was going to be good, but I wasn’t anticipating it being one of the best meals I’ve had in SF. One of those surprise, knock-your-socks-off meals. Get the roasted carrots and cheese dumplings.
Other notables: the pickled egg sandwich from the Biergarten on Octavia (my inspiration for this sandwich), vegan coconut carob chip cone from The Ice Cream Bar in Cole Valley, and the mushrooms, mozzarella, ricotta, sage, and egg pizza from Uva Enoteca (where I had dinner on my birthday – thank you Bridget and Kathleen!).
I don’t want to overwhelm you guys with food recommendations, but seriously, this city’s food is consistently blowing me away.
On a final note for this post (I’m out-doing myself with all this typing), I truly do love this blog and plan to continue blogging, but I need to take a small step back from it. It’s time to re-focus some priorities, and buckle down on my new job. I will try to post about once a week (upgrade from these past two weeks at least, right?), but be sure to follow my blog on Facebook/Twitter/subscribe so that you get updates when I post.
